Summer break means that children get a break from formal schooling, but children need to continuously learn as they develop, even during summer vacation. However, sometimes it can be challenging to get kids interested in learning when they are supposed to be on a break. Here are 4 fun ways kids can continue to learn over summer vacation.

Teach Practical Lessons

Use the summer to teach children lessons they may not necessarily learn in school, such as time management, cleaning, and contributing to the family. You can also teach them about how to make and save money by letting them run a lemonade stand or pull weeds in the neighborhood. Set up a financial goal to encourage them, such as a new bike or a new tablet when school starts again.

Summer Camp

Summer camp is a fun way for children to learn valuable lessons about working in teams and handling situations independently. They won’t have you to pick up their messes for them, so they will learn how to do it, or they won’t be able to participate in their favorite activities. Many summer camps have different themes, such as space camp or math camp, that includes educational projects every day. Since camp is so much fun, children won’t even know that they’re learning while making a volcano or putting Mentos in a Diet Coke bottle.

Explore Nature

There are a lot of lessons to learn in the woods or at the beach. Children can learn about environmental issues and how to share the planet with wildlife. They can also learn survival skills, such as how to create a fire or what berries are safe to eat. They will also learn about science, such as bugs and astronomy. Additionally, they will exercise as they learn these lessons.

Read

Children should learn that reading is fun outside of school. Whether they like Magic School Bus science books or historical American Girl books, summer is a great time for children to enjoy reading again by reading what they want instead of what’s required. Even if they like comic books or Captain Underpants books, as long as they’re reading, it’s a win.

Summer may be a break from school, but it’s not a break from learning. However, summer is a time to make learning more fun. When children enjoy learning, they will continue to learn for the rest of their lives.
